The M5A1 Close Quarters Infantry Rifle is, of course, a close quarters variant of the M12 ICR with the same overall length as the M12 when fitted with a standard sound suppressor. Adopted shortly after the ICR the CQIR has served with special forces, vehicles, commanders, and squad leaders for the last fifty years. The M5 was not initially designed to use sub-sonic munitions and were not issued with(sound suppressor accepting) threaded barrels, these were later issued and led to many problems. The standard 7.5x50USHV generates far too much pressure and waste gas for the sound suppressor to be of any use, which led to the development of the 7.5x50USLV/SS and the re-adoption of old school gunpowder cartridges. The Greyson Arms' ICR platform was designed for ultra-high pressure rounds and extreme recoil, which sub sonic rounds simply don't produce nor was it designed for gunpowder waste in the system. A large amount of complaints have arisen regarding jamming problems with both sub sonic rounds, though the USLV received fewer complaints since it leaves virtually no waste residue in the weapon. These problems have not been resolved as of ~~2335~~ 559.

The M5A1 was designed for close quarters combat and had a pair of sling mounts added for integration into the Special Operations Assault Repelling [SOAR] system. Other than jamming issues it has fared well in combat "From the hall of Montezuma to the shores of Tua Seti" with the United States Marines. Marine Special Forces Teams [MSFTs] "Miss-fits" took to a variation of the Naval Infantry's M5s over the standard Marine variations issued to the MEB (SOC)s.
